Westgate SuperContest Week 1 Recap
We are finally back and getting our 1st glimpse of the SuperContest entry make up. The best news we received even before the season kicked off on Thursday, was that there are 894 more entries this year (2,748) vs. 2016 (1854). This means roughly $1.3M more in the total prize pot. Shout out to Westgate Superbook Boss, Jay Kornegay for the huge jump in cash the 1st year ProMathletics ties for 1st with both our entries. We would also like to thank the 14 entries that decided not to make any selections this week. Your $20,000 donation is much appreciated. Speaking of cash, our calculations put the 1st place prize at around $1.3M this year, with 2nd place getting a nice $530K.
It feels like the books are prepared to claw back much of the losses from the 2nd half of last season, with only 9/2,748 going 5-0 and just 690 (25%) with 3 or more points. Further, the top 6 consensus picks (Cin, Hou, Ten, Atl, Ari, Pit) went a collective 0-6. It is week 1, but if I were a gambling man, I would expect the winning number to be closer to 52 points this year.
Our entries, which picked the same selections, went 3-2. Good enough to be in the top quartile. Our selections were (KC, NYJ, WAS, OAK, DET).
You can see the dispersion of all the entries below. Out of a possible 13,740 points, all contest entries collected 5,448.5 points. This puts the collective contest at a 40% win rate. You have to believe this will improve, but only time will tell. The 9 teams who went undefeated and are tied for 1st place this week are as follows:
