MACtion Packed Tuesday
Finally, we get some MACtion value! After getting blue balled week one of Tuesday night MACtion, we find some value with the Akron Zips (5-4) tonight. They make the 3.5-hour drive to Oxford, OH to take on the Miami Redhawks (3-6). Entering this game, these two teams have been trending in opposite directions… The Zips are on a 4-1 heater while the Redhawks are 1-4 over their last 5 games. The Redhawks arguably have the best WR in the MAC, James Gardner. The junior is having a break out campaign, as he’s caught 9 TD receptions and averages 94.1 receiving yards per game. He will be facing an opportunistic Zips secondary, who ranks towards the bottom in the nation in yards allowed per game, but also ranks 2nd in the MAC with 11 INTs and 1st in the MAC with 3 defensive touchdowns.
This one may very well come down to whether or not the Miami QBs are able to take care of the rock. Racking up a lot of yards doesn’t always translate into wins if you are turning it over and that’s the exact recipe Akron has rode to their 4-1 last 5. Gus Ragland, who started the year under center, has been out due to injury for a month, but is supposedly healthy despite not being listed as the current starter. His replacement, Billy “I’m here to Ball” Bahl, played awful in his first couple games but showed some life last week vs. Buffalo when he threw for 350 yards and 3 TDs. Despite the yards and scores, he still managed to throw 2 INTs that proved costly. Again, this is the type of MACtion cookin’ the Zips are looking for. Ragland dressed last week but did not play and it’s unclear whether this is a health or QB controversy situation. Regardless of who is slinging the pill for the Redhawks, we like the system value and the chance for the Zips to get some takeaways with the added QB shuffle pressure. We will take the points in what should be a back and forth Tuesday Night MACtion battle.
