#1 Alabama vs. #2 Clemson

We think it’s fair to say this is one year the 4-team playoff was not needed. Both Alabama and Clemson are hands down the best two teams in the nation. They will square off for all the marbles for the 3rd time in the last 4 years. Alabama was victorious in 2016, while Clemson, led by Deshaun Watson, beat Alabama in 2017. Alabama and coach, Nick Saban, will be looking to win their 6th championship since 2009. Let’s take a deeper look at both teams and decide who will win and if Alabama can cover the 5.5-point spread.

The big story line last week for Alabama heading into the Oklahoma semi-final game was the ankle health of Heisman runner-up Tua Tagovailoa. Even though Tua looked great last week, 24-27 for 318 yards, it was against a terrible OU defense that had no answer for Alabama’s RPOs. Obviously, an extra week of rest will pay dividends, and will be needed, as Tua will face the best defense he has seen all year.

Clemson’s defensive line is very, very good. They lead the nation in yards allowed per game and create a ton of pressure. Pressure that proved far too much for the Fighting Irish to handle last week even though they had a relatively stable offensive line.  With the front 7’s ability to create pressure and handle the run game, Clemson will be able to sit two safeties back and look to jump routes over the middle. This will be huge as the middle passing game is a big part of Alabama’s RPO passing outlet.

For us this game comes down to true freshman Trevor Lawrence. Clemson’s Qb earned the job in September and hasn’t looked back since. Lawrence relies heavily on one-on-ones and his WR’s abilities to go up and make the plays. Last week Notre Dame’s best corner, Julian Love, left the game due to injury, and Clemson connected on two big pass plays that ultimately separated the game. Though young and inexperienced, Lawrence, has looked great in the pocket. This week he will have to be just as good. Alabama’s pass rush is very real and if Lawrence can’t create time in the pocket it will be a very long game for him and this passing offense.

Though Alabama’s defense isn’t as good as they have been, they are still one of the nation’s best. Also, let’s not forget the past defense’s they are being comparing to. Alabama the last ten years have had some of the best defenses in the history of college football. The front-7, like Clemson is the heart of this defense. Led by nose tackle, Quinnen Williams, Alabama can get a ton of pressure, especially from the middle. The secondary has been the weak point all year and are very vulnerable to big pass plays. That is why the one-on-one big plays by Clemson will be a huge key to the game if Lawrence can get time.

With all that being said we think Alabama is the more well-rounded team. Clemson’s lack of experience especially at the Qb position will be what gives Alabama the outright victory. The most important thing is the 5.5 points that Alabama is having to lay. Not only do we think Alabama wins, but they too will cover the 5.5 points.

Score Prediction: Alabama 28 Clemson 17

Wager Recommendations:

Alabama -5.5

Alabama 1st half -3
